Kinetics of MSWI Fly Ash Thermal Degradation. 1. Empirical Rate Equation for Native Carbon Gasification

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The thermal degradation rate of organic carbon on fly ashes from different municipal solid waste incinerators, MSWIs, is studied in batch experiments in air. A global parameter, total organic carbon (TOC), is used to measure the decrease of reagent concentration in time. The TOC vs time data are well fitted by deconvolution treatment with a sum of two first-order reactions, Ri and Rj. To identify the limits of deconvolution, kinetics of the model systems dibenzofuran (DF)-biphenyl (BPh)-SiO2 and DF-BPhactive carbon-SiO2 are studied. Both Ri and Rj are carbon oxidation reactions to CO2, the oxidized carbon being not from adsorbed organic compounds but from the native carbon matrix of MSWI fly ash. Large negative ΔSq values indicate that Ri and Rj transition states are more compact and stiffer than the reagent ones. Structural changes are more important than chemical transformations since the entropic term is predominant in determining the ΔGq values. The key experimental information for the formulation of a generalized kinetic model and a mechanism for carbon gasification (Part 2) is the temperature dependence of the preexponential parameters in the empirical rate equation.

Kinetics of MSWI Fly Ash Thermal Degradation. 2. Mechanism of Native Carbon Gasification

A generalized kinetic model for fly ash native carbon oxidation is developed. It is shown that the conversion of fly ash native carbon to CO2 is the result of two simultaneous processes taking place on fly ash surface: the first process (rate constant k2) is the direct oxygen transfer from a metal oxide site to a vacant carbon active site leading to immediate carbon gasification; the second one...

Effect of carbon black and fly ash co-fillers content on mechanical and thermal behaviors of styrene butadiene rubber compounds

Fly ash (FA) is produced as a waste byproduct during the burning process of coal in thermal power plants whose cost is primarily associated to cleaning and transportation. It possesses mechanical properties on account of its constituents like silica and alumina. The use of FA as filler in styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) was of researchers’ interest to reinforce and/or to reduce product cost. In ...

Mercury Levels In Fly Ash And Apc Residue From Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Before And After Electrodialytic Remediation

Fly ash (FA) and Air Pollution Control (APC) residues collected from three municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) in Denmark and Greenland were treated by electrodialytic remediation at pilot scale for 8 to 10 h. The original residues and the treated material were analysed for mercury (Hg) in order to assess the influence of the electrodialytic treatment on the concentrations of this element...

Kinetics of Formation of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans from Carbon on Fly Ash

Experiments were carried out to study the rate of PCDD/F formation from carbon on fly ash. The formation follows first order behaviour during the first part of the experiment. With longer reaction times, degradation reactions become more important. Rate constants found were in between 0.01-0.04 min -1.

Carbonation of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash and the Impact on Metal Mobility

Fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration ~MSWI! is considered as hazardous waste that calls for a robust, reliable, and reasonable treatment technique. This investigation aims to assess the impact of CO2 partial pressure, water addition, time, and temperature on the stabilization of MSWI fly ash with particular emphasis on Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cr. Carbonation and element mobility were studied...
